Go shorty, it’s my birthday!

Go shorty, it’s my birthday!

Mom can’t believe I made it this far and had such a quick progression after my second relapse. Never did she thought I’d be standing here today stronger than ever.

7 was definitely not lucky for me! At the age of 7, I had a huge colon surgery with a mass knotted inside of me. Half a year later more problems came up and now I’m diagnosed with diabetes along with some other underlying health issues, But I’m proud of how far I’ve come!

In 2020 - I’m celebrating my first pandemic birthday as I’m turning the big 8 under a second lockdown in Honolulu. I couldn’t have any friends over other than my silly brother that was obligated to come. 8 is definitely going to be a better year! I know it!

Mom was determined to continue celebrating my birthday despite my limitations on baked goods and treats. She somehow got a great idea to turn a diabetic friendly meatball recipe into a cake and decorated it with fat free cream cheese! She was so proud of herself and it added a nice touch of normalcy on my big day! Since I couldn’t have any treats she baked some egg whites with veggies instead.

The mood was set and I had a pretty in pink theme. I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday party and I was so excited to try my “meat cake” that mom made.  We also learned that Simba is afraid of balloons but that was totally moms fault since she deflated one in front of him. I totally thought that was hilarious though. Brother is such a scaredy-cat!!

I was showered with gifts and lots of love on my Instagram page! My friends at Torus Pet sent me a new 2 Liter Torus Bowl in pink!! Torus bowl helps me with hydration and I drink fitered water all day. I am so lucky!

Mom was so happy that people reached out to her that she decided to give my dog treats away that I couldn’t eat as my birthday raffle. I guess I could be okay with that.

She even reached out to the diabetic group with my birthday story, so other sugar babies like myself have hope that we can still have normal birthdays despite our disease. Mom doesn’t want other people to give up, because things can get better and that I’m a perfect example of a dog that hit rock bottom and bounced back up again.

Nala's Birthday Cake

I got my happy ending and I keep getting stronger as the days go by. My back legs have regained it’s strength and I’m able to use the stairs again. I even do “zoomies” around the house and wrestle with my brother without mom being too worried.

Things are looking normal again, even though I need to take thyroid medication and insulin everyday. I must say life is good and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thank you “mahalo” for reading my diabetic journey.

XOXO,

Nala
